Getting Regular Copywriting Work

Blackford Centre for Copywriting

Getting regular copywriting work

Some clients will provide you with regular work – especially those that need press releases. Others may only give you work every couple of months.

No matter how often or infrequently your clients give you work –  you should always remain professional and treat each new project as if it were the first for a client.  Never miss a deadline or assume because you’ve had plenty of work from a client they will relax deadlines.  If you are unable to meet a timescale you must tell the client immediately and they usually understand.

Sell yourself – if you’re writing a website suggest the client would benefit from a newsletter. If you’re writing a brochure as them if they’ve thought of updating their website. Many clients don’t think about the bigger picture and if you are offering to help promote their business it solves a problem for them.
If copywriting becomes your full time career you should always be on the lookout for new work. Even if you are ‘snowed under’ with work you should spend at least an hour each week sourcing new work to keep the momentum going. This is when it’s important to be a good planner. You will find that once you start getting regular work you will become more confident and this in turn leads to you being able to charge higher prices for your time.
