How to get Started as a Freelance Writer?
I’m sometimes asked how you get started as a freelance writer.
Mark wrote recently: “I harbour an overwelming desire to write. I’ve written poems, Novels and short stories. I am enamoured with the writing process, I crave it constantly and I truly desire to engage in Freelance B-2-B writing. It has become a burning obsession. However, I must admit I have never participated in Freelance B-2-B writing yet. How do I start? That is my consuming question: How do I begin a Freelance B-2B writing career?”
That’s a great question. The three things you need to consider are:
1. Is your writing sharply honed? How can you improve it so it’s as good as the best? Writing B2B copy is different from novels or poetry. It can be more straightforward, and may lead to a punch line, and often aims to entertain.
2. Which channels should you approach? That includes
– freelance job boards like ODesk
– your own website combined with advertising
– or marketing to local businesses.
Different freelancers find different ways in.
3. Put your toe in the water by getting practical experience, and then seeking feedback. Ask friends if they need copy. Join a charity and write their posters.
