A good press release gives information that people will want to read on current affairs and things that are happening locally or nationally. Read newspapers and news websites to see what type of topics get coverage and how much space is dedicated to them.
The type of subjects that get printed are:
- New products and new companies. These are good for the trade press and if something is really unusual or topical (eg ‘green’ products.
- Companies spending money, creating jobs and investing in towns and cities.
- Restructuring of companies, new jobs and job losses
- Events
- Record sales or financial results
- Raising money
- Celebrity visits
- Against the odds stories
If you’re asked to write a press release, consider what will make the story newsworthy. What angle can you give it? A press release can be written on most subjects, providing you, the copywriter make it interesting to the reader.
