02 Seven things you need when online freelancing (Continued)

4. A Skype account or similar VOIP (telephone over the internet)

Some clients like speaking to you, so they can check you understand the brief.

After they employ you they will ask for your Skype or Zoom details. So get one of these now.

Then you will be ready for seamless communication of projects updates. All these accounts are free to open. Go to skype.com or Zoom.us

5. Email address

Another free resource you need is an email. You need to check your inbox regularly so you do not miss anything your client may want to communicate.

If you do not have your own website, create an email account that is for your freelancing business only.

Try these ones:

  • Gmail: http://gmail.google.com
  • Hotmail: www.hotmail.com
  • Yahoo Mail: www.yahoo.com

6. Your own website

In an upcoming module we’ll be talking more about what your website should look like. At this stage, just accept that you need a website. You can always improve it in time.

Do you have tech skills? If so, go right ahead and get your site up and running. If you don’t, find a freelancer (yes) to set one up. Upwork.com is a good place to look for one.

You’ll need a domain name (and we’ll talk about that soon).

You’ll need an internet host (type ‘internet hosting’ into Google.)

And the simplest next stage is to add a WordPress site. It gives you great flexibility in the appearance of your site. And you can change content without needing technical skills.

7. A willingness to work and the ability to focus

You need a willingness to work and to focus. Working from home means that there are a number of distractions and you simply cannot afford to procrastinate. Set working hours and stick to them in order to succeed.
