03 Making a living as a freelancer

The freelancing world has countless opportunities. But everything depends on the person you are.

Some freelancers easily earn £50,000 because they are good at what they do; and they have skills that in demand.

The Freelance Industry Report says that 50% of Software Developers earn more as freelancers than as full-time employees.

But when you start off as a new freelancer, don’t expect to earn a lot of money quickly.

You will see in different bids that experienced freelancers expect $30 for a 500-word article. But clients are not willing to pay this much money for someone with no experience.

A new freelancer may have to charge less than £5 for a 500-word article. This amount looks unfair, but this is the reality of online freelance writing and it is the same with other freelancing niches.

If you have a steady job, don’t quit until you have established a good reputation and good relationships with clients. Keep doing small freelance jobs on the side until you have established yourself.

After you have learnt how things are done in this industry and you have a great portfolio, then think about freelancing full-time or charging more.
