Though you have the potential to make a lot of money in freelancing, freelancing is not a “get rich quick” scheme. The biggest challenge you will face as a new freelancer is getting clients.
But don’t despair. There are great opportunities for inexperienced freelancers. The only skill you need is to know how to get hold of those opportunities. Take this simple advice.
Do not be intimidated by the freelance veterans who have great skills and reviews. They started somewhere, so you are also starting where they started. This means one day you can be like them or even better.
As a new freelancer you will need to work harder to prove yourself. This can mean taking those petty jobs that pays less than nothing. Focus on getting into the industry. Take those little jobs to build relationships and trust.
Do the best job you can. When you are given a project, work on it diligently, even when you know the payment is too low.
This is your chance to get some good reviews and show some activity on your profile. You will also be creating samples you can use to bid for bigger projects.
The veterans have been around for quite some times, so they are not about to work for pennies. When you are a new freelancer, see small projects as big stepping stones.
Use this old proverb, “Do not despise small beginnings”.
You need to remember starting a new career, no matter what it is, involves you beginning at the bottom and working your way up. Being a freelancer is no different as you need to build that portfolio to then move on to better paying work.
Sadly, anybody that is starting out as a freelancer should expect to have their proposals rejected time and time again.
However, those that succeed in this industry are the people that do not allow this to bother them and continue to apply.
Rejection is something that even the most experienced freelancers have to deal with. Remember, it is not about you personally just the client felt that somebody else sent them a better proposal this time around
