Preventative Health

No matter what small animal you care for, there are certain things you can do to make sure they are as healthy as possible. People often say that prevention is better than cure, and this is definitely the case when it comes to caring for animals. Vets fees can be very expensive and even worse, some conditions can be life threatening.

Here are some of the key things that you can do to keep animals as healthy as possible:

  • Keep their living area clean
  • Groom and bathe the animal as necessary
  • Check eyes, nose and ears weekly for discharge or any changes
  • Keep an eye on its faeces or droppings for any changes
  • Feed it the correct food
  • Always have clean water on supply
  • Give your animal space to exercise if applicable
  • Worm your animal regularly if applicable
  • Check for parasites and skin conditions, especially if it’s an outdoor pet
  • Take your pet for regular vet visits
  • Give your pet the vaccinations recommended by the vet
  • Get your animal neutered

It may seem like a long list of things to look out for, but once you have set a routine for cleaning, it’ll be easier to keep up. The more animals you have, the more often you’ll need to change their waste areas and wash the bedding.

Visiting the vet is very important, even if it’s just for a check up. If you or your clients are worried about costs, consider whether you or your clients are ready to take a small animal as a pet. Certain animals like dogs and cats can cost more to treat; consider the importance of pet insurance for medical fees.

Some animals like cats and dogs will require worming on regular intervals and you can buy the tablets from a pet store or your local vets.
