Common mistakes to avoid as a counsellor

Blackford Centre for Counselling

Every counsellor makes mistakes. It is simple human nature. There are some mistakes, though, that are easily avoidable with a little effort on your part.

Poor listening

As a counsellor, you need to listen carefully to what a client says, while still taking effective notes. This takes some practise. Make eye contact, use open body language, and engage your client so that you can really listen.

Too many distractions

When you are in session with a client, your focus needs to be 100% with that client. Turn off your mobile phone, and mute your computer so it will not “ding” whenever an email comes in or a calendar reminder comes due.

Too much empathy

Your job is to empathise appropriately, but not so much that your client does not take responsibility for his or her own behaviour. Be careful about letting your own emotions spill over and affect the client’s progress.

Too much advice

It is tempting to jump in and give advice, especially when it is very apparent what the client needs to change. Do not fall into the trap of telling clients what to do about their problems, but instead help them come to their own solutions in their own way.
