How much a counsellor charges

Blackford Centre for Counselling

It is difficult to set prices for counselling, because the market is so closed. Prices are rarely quoted openly. You can start by comparing the prices charged by other professionals.

A solicitor may charge £70 an hour, a private doctor £100 an hour, and a carpenter £15. A heating engineer may charge £35 an hour and a copywriter £35 an hour.

Based on these figures, a counsellor might charge £25 to £35 an hour.

It is at the low end of what professionals charge, but sadly the caring professionals earn less than people who push paper money around the City of London. Social workers, for example, are still paid a salary which would bring a car worker out on strike, despite being called upon to wipe up the messes that society causes.

Bear in mind that when you start you will have little proof of ability, and not much experience. So be careful to set the rate for your first jobs at an attractive level. Be careful, too, not to set the rate suspiciously low. No one wants to hire second-rate talent when they can afford the best.

Even if you don’t need the money, you should not undercharge, because it sets a lower rate for other counsellors.
