How do you cope when you hear negative things all the time from clients?

If you hear only negative comments all the time, it might put a strain on your frame of mind.

Does this mean you would be no good as a therapist?

To an extent, the counsellor should be able to keep a certain distance between themselves and their client.

In the same way, an oncologist deals with patients who may be very sick. That doctor needs to keep themselves removed from the patient’s fear and worry.

Some people are temperamentally able to keep that distance. Others are not.

And some are able to empathise with a stream of depressed people, while others will find it harder.

Some types of counselling are more proactive than others. For example, CBT is a very solution-oriented kind of therapy. You might want to offer yourself as that kind of therapist?

Alternatively, if this might get you down, think about becoming a coach, rather than a counsellor.
