How do I know that its needed in the area I live in?

Blackford Centre for Counselling

Maria wrote to me with this question:

‘How do I know that counselling is needed in the area I live in?’

This was my reply:

With regard to what is needed in your area, have you looked at what is already available?

People think counselling is provided by the NHS or the state alone, but actually there are many independent people working in many different fields such as in alternative therapy centres, leisure centres and beauty clinics.

As more and more employers become aware of the importance of good mental health, counselling and coaching is increasingly available within the sports, business and local authority sector.

Remember being a counsellor covers many areas and you will have an area that you will naturally feel inspired by and want to specialise in.

It is always better to be a specialist in one area.  This helps you to develop your knowledge and really make a difference to someone who desperately needs specific help.

Perhaps you are particularly interested in working with people who abuse substances or perhaps helping families appeals to you more?

It’s more than likely that if you are passionate about something, this will be the area that suits you best. The passion you feel will inspire those around you.
