How to find clients as a counsellor

Blackford Centre for Counselling

Clients have to be able to afford your fees. This therefore excludes students, the unemployed, and pensioners reliant on the state pension. In the ideal world, you should be able to counsel such people, but for the time being you will have to concentrate on helping those who can afford you. They include:

  • Couples whose marriage is breaking down
  • Parents who cannot get on with their children
  • People who are addicted to a substance, such as a drug
  • People who have a personal problem such as nervousness, loneliness or sexual ambivalence.

Potential clients are more likely to be found in the better parts of your area. People who live in run-down council estates are unlikely to believe they can solve their problems through a counsellor. They are also unlikely to have the money to pay.

Once you have decided who your target clients are going to be you can then put your marketing campaign into action.  This can be done with advertising, leaflets and brochures, PR and networking.  Our course tells you how to market yourself and gives you plenty of ideas on how to find clients.
