How to get started in counselling

Blackford Centre for Counselling

Here’s what Emily said to me today:

“I started my diploma through you guys back in 2016 and have only just got the courage now to set up my own business. I’m struggling with where to allocate my time and find the best avenues to advertise. Where to find clients etc. Where would you suggest I start? (I have very limited budget).”

My first thoughts were: what a waste! If Emily had started her business back in 2016, she would be well established by now.

What about you?

Are you prevaricating? Are you letting the months and years slip by?

If counselling is the big love in your life, you MUST get started now.

There are two ways to do this: go alone, or with support of a training organisation like ours. There is no right or wrong way. Just go and do it.

She said: “I’m struggling with where to allocate my time and find the best avenues to advertise. Where to find clients etc. Where would you suggest I start? (I have very limited budget).”

And here are my thoughts.

First, I checked that Emily has a website, which she does, which is great. I can’t reveal the name. But the domain name doesn’t say ‘quality counselling’. It says ‘I run basic counselling’. So that needs changing. I went on to say:

  • Offer free counselling to a limited number of clients, to get testimonials. Do this by putting up postcards in shop windows or talking on social media.
  • Start feeding social media with comments and ideas.
  • You just have to keep at it. The longer you do it, the more people will hear about you.
