Stress is all around us
Many people are stressed and seek the advice of a counsellor to help them deal with life. 75% of GPs identify unemployment as a significant cause of stress. 60% say work is significantly stressful. Financial and marital difficulties are also major stress factors.
Difficulties occur when many stresses arrive together. For example, the client may face the threat of unemployment, and they may work long hours to compensate for the reduced number of staff who have already been made redundant. The client may also have a bad boss.
All this can harm the client’s home life, and may threaten their marriage. In addition, the client may not be earning enough, and they may not be able to sell their house because of negative equity (where the mortgage is higher than the value of the house).
All these stresses add up to a big problem. In some cases, it ends in suicide.
In the 1980s, people had stress, but they could change their job or move house. For many people, these options are no longer available, due to lack of jobs or the cost of housing.
